Promoting Yourself with a Good Resume
I know this seems a little off-topic for User Experience Design, but resume-writing IS a graphic art (printed medium typography) so it's worth discussing a little. I'm amidst a bunch of college seniors struggling to find jobs before we finish school in 86 days and I continually find that many aren't too sure how to make a decent resume. Don't be misinformed; it's not simply putting a list of the stuff you know and have done on a page and sending it off to several companies. There are several details of which a good resume writer should be aware.
Design Technologists
So, in the process of finding an internship for this semester, I learned that I'm a "design technologist." What does that mean, exactly? According to Frog Design: The Design Technologist helps analyze, prototype, design, and develop an application's user-interface. He/she turns stunning ideas into working prototypes and production-quality applications — not only providing a high-fidelity implementation, but also creatively enhancing the vision of the visual and interaction designers. The DTs works closely with design analysts and business strategists to generate ideas based on their knowledge of technology platforms and their comprehensive understanding of industry-specific technology trends. He/she bridges the gap between design and technology by providing technical guidance to the creative team, facilitating the transition from design to development, and leveraging his/her design sensibilities during user interface development.
Designers Are Not Artists
Designers are not artists. Most people confuse art with design, but there's a difference. Designers have artistic talent, but they are not required to be experts in graphics, typography, colors, etc. The job of the designer is multi-faceted. Most importantly, it's to understand artistic elements and put them together to make something interesting. Designers have the concept, the idea inside their heads. Their goal is to express it to others, mapping out layouts, describing the vision, innovating.
Strike 1, You're Out : Increasing Learnability
When it comes to technology, I think the main difference between the young and older generations is the amount of patience. Older people, who have lead most of their lives in the absence of technology, are much quicker to denounce the advantages of the computer when something doesn't work. Conversely, those of us who have grown up amidst the silicon chips are much more lenient when problems arise.
